Even with early successes, there is still much to be done. The power of public-private partnership is needed. Fortunately, our community has been blessed with a number of those in the private sector who have been working diligently to help make the Riverwalk a reality. Under the leadership of Dan Mahurin, the president of SunTrust Bank Tampa Bay, the "Friends of the Tampa Riverwalk" steering committee was formed. Since then, the committee has been studying our community and others for the best and brightest ideas to ensure that the Riverwalk is well understood, well organized and well managed.
With that research and reports already provided to the master planner, the Friends of the Tampa Riverwalk and Mayor Bob Buckhorn of Tampa will continue reaching out to the broader private sector, asking the business community to join the public and philanthropic sectors with their financial commitment to making the Riverwalk a reality. The vision we share can only come true with the means to make it happen.
Already, corporations, such as Bright House Networks, have made considerable contributions. Local law firm Ruden, McClosky, local developer A Better Place Group, and private donors such as Dottie and Sandy MacKinnon have also stepped to the plate.
